E-learning

Education offered using electronic delivery methods such as CD-ROMs, video conferencing, websites and e-mail. Often used in distance learning programmes.This page gives an overview of the e-learning initiatives happening all over the world. These initiatives are list under different head.

Distance education programmes

List of colleges and universities offering Distance Education Programmes - a list of Distance Learning institutions.

Chief of Naval Operations, Office of Training Technology - an on-line resource for training technology information supported by the US Navy. With its worldwide operations, the US Armed Forces constitute a large consumer and developer of at-distance courses, including an increasing number delivered via web.

Wisconsin Distance Education Clearinghouse The Distance Education Clearinghouse is comprehensive and widely recognized Web site bringing together distance education information from Wisconsin, national, and international sources. New information and resources are being added to the Distance Education Clearinghouse on a continual basis.

Mind Egde- Higher Education Online. The MindEdge delivers an integrated course and course management solution and the academic and technical support you need to be successful. MindEdge delivers its courses through a robust Course Management System, which is seamlessly integrated with the institution’s own online presence. They e also provide a range of Additional Support Services for students, faculty, and program administrators.

The Sloan Consortium -A consortium of institutions and organizations committed to quality online education. The purpose of the Sloan Consortium (Sloan-C) is to help learning organizations continually improve quality, scale, and breadth according to their own distinctive missions, so that education will become a part of everyday life, accessible and affordable for anyone, anywhere, at any time, in a wide variety of disciplines.

The Global Campus -The Global Campus is a collaborative multimedia database containing a variety of outstanding educational materials such as images, sounds, text, and video to be used for nonprofit, educational purposes. The goal of the project is to share resources through technology by providing a central "campus" where institutions may make their resources available on the World Wide Web. We provide easy access to high quality materials which can be used for instructional development worldwide, while respecting intellectual property rights.

Vancouver Film School - A school offering courses on different streams of multimedia

e-learning guru - A portal started as a way to offer the e-learning community practical information in a plain-language format. This site is jam packed with "how to" articles, templates and calculators in the tool box, dozens of white papers, time saving book summaries and links to the best sites on the net.

Distance Educator -Distance-Educator has been on the web since 1995, in anticipation of the growing popularity of distance education. As a hub for consulting, news, information, instructional design and products focusing on distance education, it has become an essential source for information, and inspiration for countless professionals.

EdWeb-San Diego State University - The College of Education at San Diego State University offers a wide variety of academic programs ranging from undergraduate study to advanced degrees.

University of North Texas - Texas Center for Educational Technology. The Texas Center for Educational Technology facilitates and conduct research; develop and evaluate collaboratives between industry, education and educational communities; and serve as a focal point within the state of Texas and beyond in order that instructional technology can be created and adapted for integration into the educational programs of the state and the nation.

The Ohio State University-The major goal of technology education at the Ohio State Univesity is to prepare students to be qualified technology education teachers who are able to provide leadership in technology education.

University of Kansas - The Institute for the Exploration of Virtual Realities, is a newly formed institute within the University Theatre and the Department of Theatre & Film at the University of Kansas. Its goal is to explore the uses of virtual reality and related technologiesand how they may be applied to theatre production and performance. We are very pleased to have a number of generous sponsors of our work. Among these are: Act-3D, Artifice, Inc., MetaCreations and The Virtus Corporation. Our work is generously supported by the United States Institute of Theatre Technology and the University of Kansas Instructional Technology FundInstitute for the Exploration of Virtual Realities.

University of Dar es Salaam -The decision to establish the Instructional Technology Resource Unit at the University of Dar es Salaam emanated from a project proposal submitted to the Carnegie Corporation for funding in 2001. In implementing the terms of reference, the unit conducted a survey in order to determine the e-readiness of the University of Dar es Salaam to use ICT in carrying out its primary activities of teaching and learning, research and service to the community. The survey has led to the need for a unit that can facilitate the development of the institutional capacity for e learning.

TECFA Educational Technology -Edutech is an on-line resource for education and technologies. This site offers a variety of options including: sites of the month, an alphabetical search for themes, a query search, and an opportunity to submit a theme to Edutech's data base.

Projects

National Project on Technology Enhanced Learning - The main objective of this programme (Funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India) is to enhance quality of engineering education in the country by developing curriculum based video and web courses (at least 100 + 100) and web courses (at least 115). This shall be done by IITs (Seven), IISc Bangalore and other Premier institutions through a collaborative effort. IITs and IISc-Bangalore shall function as resource Institutions under the Programme.

MIT's OpenCourseWare, a free and open educational resource for faculty, students, and self-learners around the world. OCW supports MIT's mission to advance knowledge and education, and serve the world in the 21st century. It is true to MIT's values of excellence, innovation, and leadership.

Futures Project: Policy for Higher Education in a changing world, attempts to provide a glimpse into the future of higher education under a variety of different scenarios. The scenarios, which were developed for use as discussion tools, each use real facts as a base before leading the reader into a hypothetical future. In the the pub section are several interesting papers, particularly "Institutions Offering Virtual Courses" documenting institutions who offer virtual courses- the numbers that are accredited, non accredited, offer certificates etc

The elearning europe -This portal gathers information on the use of multimedia technologies and the Internet for education, training and lifelong learning in Europe. The portal is open to all the relevant actors and communities for sharing experiences, disseminating projects and discussing ideas.The elearningeuropa.info portal was initiated by the European Commission. It is an integral part of the eLearning Action Plan, which is managed by the Multimedia Unit of the Directorate General Education and Culture.

Discover NCSA: The National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) is a leader in defining the future's high-performance cyberinfrastructure for scientists, engineers, and society. The center is one of the four original partners in the TeraGrid project, a National Science Foundation initiative that now spans nine sites. When completed, the TeraGrid will be the most comprehensive cyberinfrastructure ever deployed for open scientific research, including high-resolution visualization environments, and computing software and toolkits connected over the world's fastest network.National Center for Supercomputing Applications

Research and reference papers

"The State of e-Learning in the States"summarizes a survey that the National Governors Association conducted about each state's online-learning programs. The National Governors Association (NGA) is the collective voice of the nation's governors and one of Washington, D.C.'s, most respected public policy organizations.

"A Vision of e-Learning for America's Workforce" is a report written by members the National Governors Association, Commission on Technology and Adult Learning, suggests that state governments should seek to form more public-private partnerships in online learning because the economic incentive for investment is so strong. "High-quality e-learning creates an economic advantage for both individuals and organizations by improving 'speed to capability' -- or shortening the amount of time it takes to get workers up to speed on new products and processes," the report states.

E-learning associations

The Teaching, Technology & Learning Group. The non-profit TLT Group has helped over 500 educational institutions, associations, and corporations around the world to improve teaching and learning by making more appropriate and cost-effective use of information technology without sacrificing what matters most.

EduCause - EDUCAUSE is a nonprofit association whose mission is to advance higher education by promoting the intelligent use of information technology. Membership is open to institutions of higher education, corporations serving the higher education information technology market, and other related associations and organizations. EDUCAUSE programs include professional development activities, print and electronic publications, strategic policy initiatives, research, awards for leadership and exemplary practices, and a wealth of online information services.

The eLearning Guild-Guild is a Community of Practice for designers, developers, and managers of e-Learning. Through this member driven community we provide high-quality learning opportunities, networking services, resources, and publications. Community members represent a diverse group of instructional designers, content developers, web developers, project managers, contractors, consultants, and managers and directors of training and learning services who work in corporate, government, and academic organizations. All members share a common interest in e-Learning design, development, and management.
