FAQs

1) What is Kerala Education Grid?
The Kerala Education Grid is a plan project of the Govt. of Kerala under the Dept. of Higher Education. The vision of the KEG is to provide quality education to all independent of geography. This is being addressed through a collaborative effort by the various stakeholders in the higher education. In the first phase of the project science and technical institutions are to be covered.The project proposes to address the issue of providing quality education in the colleges and universities through Technology Enhanced Learning and Teaching[TELT] facilitated processes by involving the concerned teachers as far as possible.

2) How is the KEG managed?
An Education Grid Governing Council and an Education Grid Apex Project Co-ordination Unit has been constituted by Govt. Orders. The Governing Council takes care of the budget and policy issues. The APCU consists of representatives of the concerned Govt. Departments, eminent academicians and representatives from the industry. The project is co-ordinated by the Education Grid Operations Centre at IIITM-K and the project is co-ordinated by the Director, IIITM-K. 3) How is the KEG funded?
Part of the investment for the KEG will come from the Govt. of Kerala through the Dept. of Higher Education while the rest is expected from the participant colleges and institutions. The Govt. of Kerala has allocated an amount of Rs. 7.31 crores under the Plan Project. Investment would also be solicited from the industries.

4) What are the different activities of Kerala Education Grid?
The Kerala Education Grid would be taking up the following activities:

  • Facilitating collaborative efforts in sharing best practices and providing quality education
  • Faculty and teachers' orientation programs in Technology Enhanced Learning and Teaching
  • Development of e-courseware in various subjects
  • Deployment of refereed courseware
  • Identifying areas for improving the quality of education
  • Identifying areas where resources could be shared across institutions
  • Organising seminars and workshops in the field of quality in education

5) How do institutions / colleges participate in the KEG programs?
The institutionscan become a member of the Kerala Education Grid and invest in setting up the infrastructue for Technology Enhanced Learning and Teaching. This would include setting up of a college level Education Grid management team,connectivity to the Education Grid backbone, contibution towards development of e-courseware, setting up an education server in the college and facilties for accessibilty to students.

6) What is TELT?
The environment provided by information and communication technologies, computing and information services is best inducted for education through course specific knowledge and collaboration services over web and internet. Such content would help the teachers and students considerably. This web enhanced resources and learning support framework is being referred to as the Technology Enhanced Learning and Teaching(TELT). Some of the functions and services in TELT that are of relevance to education are digital libraries with personalised access to documents and media files, Course or Learning Management System, threaded discussion boards and chat for groups, access to relevant backend computation and simulation tools, interactive self-evaluation systems, etc. One of the major objectives of the Education Grid project is to make available all such tools and facilities to all the teachers in the colleges and through them to the students.

7) How does TELT help the teachers and students?
In the regular colleges TELT would provide the teachers and students supplementary learning resources and rich web-facilitated learning processes for the regular courses. The TELT environment is expected to make the learning process easier for students by the use of various modes of learning and also with better interaction between the teachers and among the students.

8) What is the relationship between KEG and NPTEL?
The National Programme for Technology Enhanced Learning is a project under the Ministry of Human Resources and Development, Govt. of India and jointly executed by all the IITs and IISc, Bangalore. NPTEL aims to create quality content in about 120 courses for the students of engineering courses. The learning materials would be developed as both web-based material and as recorded video lectures by experts in the field. Please refer http://www.nptel.iitm.ac.in for more details. These learning materials would be available to KEG and KEG would complement this exercise by putting in place across the colleges in Kerala the necessary infrastructure, intra and inter institutional processes and orientation of the teachers.

9) What help is available to interested teachers?
The Resource Centres of the KEG would be organizing frequent workshops for orienting the teachers to TELT. Facilities for content development are available at the Resource Centres. If a group of teachers evince interest in developing a course and submits a proposal, support will be provided to the group on the basis of the recommendation of the APCU.
