Abstract: Slide used

Because of its success, XML is increasingly used in many different application areas, and is moving towards the center of applications, evolving from an exchange format to the native data format of application components. These developments suggest that similar to other core areas of application design, XML should be designed conceptually before the implementation tasks of designing markup and writing schemas are approached. This talk will present why conceptual modeling will become an important part of the XML landscape, what issues need to be addressed, and what the requirements for a conceptual modeling language for XML are. Some existing and new research ideas on XML conceptual models and how these address modeling issues with XML will be discussed.

Dr. Venkatesh Chopella, Indian Institute of InformationTechnology and Management - Kerala

Abstract:

Constructing and Validating Data Models by Typechecking Formal Specifications

Data modeling methodologies, particularly Entity-Relationship modeling, rely on graphical representations, making it difficult to express and verify the consistency of arbitrary data constraints. The use of mathematical notation makes the model specification precise but also complex and tedious, and, in the absence of automated support for validation, error prone.

We use the specification language PVS and its theorem proving environment to formally construct, reason with, and interactively validate an example data model at various levels of abstraction. The methodology proposed here makes modeling resemble programming in a strongly typed environment. Data models are implemented as PVS theories consisting of type declarations, function definitions, axioms and theorems. Entities and Relationships are expressed as types. Constraints on the data model are expressed as axioms relating entity and relationship sets. Additional correctness conditions are automatically generated by PVS's type checker. The theory interpretation mechanism of PVS is used to show how a concrete implementation can be proven valid with respect to an abstract model.

The talk will assume familiarity with the basic concepts of datamodeling and some elementary knowledge of types. No familiarity with PVS or theorem proving is assumed.

This is joint work with Prof. Arijit Sengupta -- Wright State University, Raj Soin School of Business Prof. Ed Roberston -- Indiana University School of Informatics Prof. Steve Johnson -- Indiana Univeristy Computer Science
